Ivan Witham 8/9/1931 – 10/1/2019

Ivan Witham, 88, of York, ME passed away peacefully at his home on Oct 1, 2019. Ivan was a longtime bridge player in the NH seacoast area, and one of the original members of the Great Bay Bridge Club in Newington. He was playfully known as Mr. 3 No Trump for his frequent jumps to that contract. He was also known to jump to other game contracts or even slam contracts without the usual preliminaries of describing his hand. Most times he made the bid.

Ivan served 4 years in the US Navy onboard several submarines and was a proud veteran. He asked that his body be donated to Harvard University for science purposes, and he was a member of the United Methodist Church in York, ME. He will be missed.

William H. Ashford 9/5/1943 - 8/21/2019

William Harry Ashford, 75, of Newton Junction, was born in Portsmouth September 5, 1943, son of the late Bertram and Mabel (Carter) Ashford. Raised in Portsmouth, he graduated from Portsmouth High, Class of 1961. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country honorably in Korea and attended South Dakota State University during his enlistment. He graduated from NH Technical College with a mechanical drawing degree.

Bill was employed at Adams-Russell Corporation as a design engineer for a number of years, including work in California with Lockheed Corporation and Boeing on the U.S. Air Force/Northrop B-2. Bill later worked at the U.S. Post Office in Concord, Hampton and Plaistow, retiring in 2008.

Bill was an avid Bridge player, achieving a “Life Master” in Bridge in his 20’s and most recently was active with Great Bay Bridge Association. He enjoyed playing golf, where he was a member at Portsmouth Country Club. He also enjoyed building furniture and spending time at the family camp at Great East Lake.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Bill’s life at 2 PM on Sunday, October 20, 2019 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home – Crematory, 811 Lafayette Rd., Hampton. Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

Margaret ("Peg") Gross 4/18/1923 - 5/29/2019

Margaret "Peg" Gross, a resident of Concord NH for 56 years, died May 29, 2019. Peg was born April 18, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pa. Peg attended Gettysburg College and met her future husband Blake there. They were married in 1948. Peg loved life, always had a positive outlook and enjoyed a wonderful sense of humor. She was an avid and accomplished bridge player and taught bridge for many years. She loved tennis, golf and aerobics-which she attended into her early nineties. She was an active member of the Unitarian Church in Concord Peg's family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her greatest source of strength and joy. Peg was predeceased by her husband Blake, and her sister Joyce Morgenthaler.   As Jim Felch writes   Peg had been a regular at the Bow club for as long as I can remember....probably since the days Aileen Houle brought the game to Bow.  Well into her 90's, Peg was still playing at the club up through last fall.  Her kindness and pleasant demeanor will be greatly missed!  

Stuart Goff 8/27/37 - 5/5/2019

Stuart was born on August 27, 1937 and passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Stuart was a resident of Keene, New Hampshire at the time of passing. He was educated in California where he graduated from North Hollywood High School class of 1954. Stuart was 5th on the NHBA top 150 with 5191 masterpoints as of May 2019.

Walter Fenton 4/15/2019

Walter Fenton of Laconia, NH passed away April 15th. Walter will be sorely missed by the New Hampshire Bridge community.  He was a long time partner of Bernice Kramer. Walter was an excellent bridge player with a droll sense of humor and an avid reader.  

Richard Bator 6/23/43 - 4/11/2019

HUDSON, NH – Richard A. Bator, age 75, a longtime resident of Hudson, NH, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11th, 2019 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack.  He was the beloved husband of Patricia A. (McAweeney) Bator with whom he shared 30 years of marriage.  

Born in Springfield, MA on June 23, 1943, he was the son of the late Alphonse J. and Anna (Boska) Bator.

Richard had a brilliant mind.  He was a Mathematics graduate of Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) and earned a Master’s degree from Northeastern University.  Prior to his retirement, he worked as a computer engineer for Digital and Compaq as well as an independent consultant for various firms.  Early on, Dick enjoyed playing the saxophone.  He was a master bridge player and traveled extensively to many tournaments over the years.  He was a kind and loving man who was happiest entertaining family and close friends.  He especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics play on television.  He was also an avid fan of “Jeopardy” and enjoyed playing along with the contestants.  Most recently his greatest joy was spending time with his great-grandson, who certainly kept him on his toes!

In addition to his wife Patricia, survivors include his two sons, Christopher Bator of CA and Jeff Bator of NV; two stepsons, Alan Sousa of Idaho and Scott Sousa and his wife Lauraine of Hudson, NH; eight grandchildren, Kelsey Sousa of Hudson, Julian and Eliza Sousa of Idaho, Nathan Davan and Kristen Kather of Hudson, Ashley Davan of Gilmington, David and Christopher Munson of Hudson, and one great-grandson, Joshua Jambard of Hudson. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, John Bator of MA and Edward and Ann Bator of FL.

 

George Angelopoulos 10/31/1925 - 7/7/2018

George J. Angelopoulos, 92, of Manchester, died at his residence July 7, 2018. George was born in Dover, NH October 31, 1925. He opened and operated a clothing store on Maple Street with his wife Vivian before they purchased the store that would become his namesake, George's Apparel, in 1988 on Elm Street in downtown Manchester. James F. Drake 1946 - 6/29/2018

Jim Drake, a Gold Life Master and bridge teacher who lived in Chapel Hill NC, died June 29. He was 72.

Joanna Pagano, Drake's life partner for 24 years, said, "Jim was a patient teacher. He taught bridge in his native New Hampshire, then in Rhode Island and in Chapel Hill. He taught a great many students, and his entertaining classes were loved by all."

A native of Manchester NH, Drake graduated from Webster Elementary School and Manchester Central High School. He attended the University of New Hampshire, and graduated from New Hampshire College, which is now Southern New Hampshire University.

In high school he was a member of DeMolay and played guard on a state championship DeMolay team. After college graduation he was a sporting good salesman in nothern New England.

Jim was a coin collector, avid trout fisherman and a sports enthusiast who closely followed the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He was overjoyed when the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004, ending an 86-year drought.

Pagano said, "Jim's infectious personality made him the life of the party, and he will be truly missed.

Wade Greer 7/20/1930 - 6/13/2018

F. Wade Greer, Jr., 87, from Nokomis, Florida and Exeter, NH, passed away Wed., June 13, 2018. In 1965 Wade went to work for Wire Belt Company of America and took over as President in 1973, retiring in 1998. Wade was a Ruby Lifemaster and a certified Director. He will be missed. Obituary

Elaine Goldberg July 4, 1926 - June 22, 2017

Elaine Goldberg, 90, died June 22, 2017 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, NH. Elaine loved her weekly bridge games and played in both the Eastman and Lebanon games regularly.  She was a vivid spark who faced her advancing age and declining health with dignity, grace and an upbeat, positive attitude. She never dwelled on herself, but always wanted to know how others were. A friend described her as a “hoot” and that she was.  She will be dearly missed. Obituary

William Lightner Landis Sr. 1921 - 2017

William Lightner Landis Sr., 95, of Concord, formerly of Sharon, Conn., passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017, after a period of failing health. In retirement, Landis pursued his passions of golf, gardening and bridge. He attained the rank of Silver Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League and enjoyed traveling to play in tournaments throughout the country. Robert John Holak 5/17/1950 - 1/29/2017

Robert John Holak, 66, of Dover died Sunday January 29, 2017, surrounded by his family, after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Lawrence, MA, he worked as an engineer for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was known for his gardening skills and for playing duplicate bridge.
