We have received the sad news that Ken Smith died suddenly and unexpectedly at home this morning. Ken had been a member for the last year or two, playing mostly on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons.
No further details at present.
Congratulations to Sandy Davies and Tom Gisborne on winning the Swiss pairs at the EBU Overseas Congress in Sicily. There were 86 pairs, the largest turnout for an overseas congress for some time. The Swiss Pairs took place over two days and 80 boards.
This competition in Derby attracted a strong line-up but Sheffield players aquitted themselves well in the face of stiff opposition.
The Champagne Pairs was won by Sandy Davies and Roman Gembicki.
Rod Hose & David Adams were 4th in the Swiss Pairs, with Sandy Davies & Roman Gembicki not far behind (6th). Bazil Caygill & Matthew Kiggins were back in 10th but Matthew gets a special mention for his nonchalant execution of a criss-cross squeeze against England international Jason Hackett.
Yorkshire League – Pools for 2019 to 2020
The season starts on 27 October and below are the lists of the pools for the seven teams.
If your name appears in one pool, it doesn’t mean that you will play all your matches for that team. This is particularly so for the A, B and C teams and it will be noticed that the pools for A and C are large and that for B is quite small with the intent that some players in the A and C pools will play for the B team
The A Pool is now being co-ordinated...
Dominic Rayner’s new course for beginners will be starting on Tuesday evening, 17th September 2019 (7:15 - 9:15pm) at the club. If you know of anyone wishing to take up the game please let them know. Dominic can be contacted via firstname.lastname@example.org or visit https://www.allthingsbridge.co.uk/
Gill Woodcock, Margot Stuart-Harris, Steve Willis and Mick Lindley have won the Vice-Chairman's Teams with a huge +64 IMPs.
In second place, and winning the handicap prize, were Simon Woolham, David Adams, David Price and Mike Ruck who were not all that far behind the winners with +49 IMPs.
Well done, all!
The local leagues are set up and ready to roll.
First Waddington League fixtures are 14th October!
First Open League fixtures are 21st October!
Nobody has to go to The Park Hotel any more!!! *
Free Victory Point for the first team to submit a result!!!! **
** probably not.
Sandy Davies and Arthur Hughes won the event with a match to spare, eventually finishing 24 VPs ahead of Bill Barraclough and David Duckworth in second place.
Handicap winners were Judy Jackson and Martyn James, and then Simon and Rosemary Woolham. Well done to all the above.
Results are here.
Huge thanks to Ann Wall, Anne Camm and others for a splendid Tea at half time.
We have received the sad news that Julia Faulkner has passed away this last week. She was a member for three years and a very regular Wednesday afternoon player.
The funeral will be held on Friday 13th September at 11:15 am at All Saints Church, Ecclesall then afterwards at Beauchief Gold Club, on Abbey Lane.
The first of the new sessions on Thursday evenings saw seven and a half tables, a great start! The "relaxed" session played 21 boards and saw Andy and Karen MacDonald score over 70% - well done!
Nine tables played in the "usual" movement downstairs and both movements played the same boards.
We are sorting some teething technical issues with scoring two separate events at the same time, which led to some wrong names in bridgemates, but results were posted on this site within the normal time.
The bridge year runs from August to July, so all of the 2018-2019 ladder competetions have been completed.
And the winners are...
Allen (Monday afternoons)
Patterson (Tuesday evenings)
Barber (Wednesday afternoons)
Paton (Wednesday evenings)
Rankin (Thursday afternoons)
Chamberlain (Thursday evenings)
Frith (Friday evenings)
Jepson (Wednesday evenings - non-expert)
We have received the sad news that Betty Nimmo passed away at home on 23rd July. She hadn’t played at the club for the last two years but was still a member of the club at the time.
The funeral is on 3rd August at Hutcliffe Wood at 11:15.
Chris Derrick not only came an excellent third in the Swiss Pairs but also won the opening Pairs on the Thursday evening. He was partnering Tommy Brass. (Hence the expression "Where there's Derrick, there's Brass"!)
108 pairs took part over 12 matches in two days in the Swiss Pairs. I unwittingly gave Chris a helping 17-3 win in Match 10 at Table 2, the start of my downfall to 29th place, one below Sandy Davies and Dave Robinson.
... and by "some people", I mean "me and my partner"; take a leisurely stroll through this video of a very recent session from the American Summer Nationals (aka the Spingold).
The first two boards of the session race through in only twenty-three minutes. then comes board 3:
The bidding takes ten & a half minutes
Tricks 1 & 2 are a flurry in only two and a bit minutes
Then East has a bit of a think, for eight minutes, before trick 3 is done.
Not to be outdone, North takes eleven minutes...
