We are sad to report the passing of Anne Furie last week. Anne had been a member of theclub for more than 40 years. Our condolences go to Billy and her family.
The funeral will take place at 2pm on Wednesday 4th December at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium.
Afterwards, there will be a gathering at Abbeydale Sports Club.

Congratulations to two Sheffield pairs who topped the YCBA Handicapped Pairs competetion played at Sheffield on Saturday 9th November.
Winners were:
N/S: Bill Barraclough & Dave Duckworth (56.35%)
E/W: Simon Woolham & Rosemary Woolham (661.78%)
Both pairs came top before and after the application of the handicapping.

We are sad to report the passing of Ken Jones. Ken had been diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of cancer and died on 16th July. He had been a member of the club for more than 35 years and played in many of the club sessions.

Sheffield A has won the Summer season of the Online Yorkshire League for Teams of 4.
The team were 18 VPs ahead of second place and comprised Arthur Hughes and Richard Pike with Dave Robinson and Tony Sowter, and David Fletcher with Graham Jepson. Well done, all.

Longer-standing club members will remember Martin Cantor, who played at & for Sheffield Bridge Club for many years before retiring and moving to Germany.
Since the 2020 lockdown there has been a regular, weekly friendly game* on BBO between Sheffield Bridge club and Bielefeld, which Martin has been instrumental in running and maintaining.

Dave Robinson and Tony Sowter and team mates have won the trial to represent England in the World Bridge Games in Buenos Aires in October. With David Kendrick and Malcolm Prior, they beat the tem of Paul Hackett, Brian Senior, John Holland, Alan Mould, Gunnar Hallberg and David Mossop by 25 IMPs in a 112 board match over 2 days at West Midlands BC.

Dave Robinson and Tony Sowter were part of the Yorkshire A Team that has won the A Final of this event. These League Finals were the invention some years ago of Graham Jepson when he was on the EBU Board. Second in the B Final was the Yorkshire B team including Rod Hose and David Adams. This year the event was played online.

Two trophies were awarded at the Spring Bank Holiday Stratified Multiple Teams.
The leading Non-Expert Team of Russ and Liz Harrison, Caroline Cousins and Richard Field won the Musson Trophy, while the overall winners for the Campfield Trophy were Martin White, Pete Waterman, Graham Jepson and David Fletcher with a score of +73 IMPs.
Well done, all.
(To qualify a team to be non-expert, their average National Grade needed to be below 48%, which is roughly the national average.)

Sheffield, representing Yorkshire, has today finished 4th out of 8 teams in the National Final for the Garden Cities Trophy, having last month won the Northern Regional Final.
Our team on both days was was

Bazil Caygill and Matthew Kiggins
Dave Robinson and Tony Sowter
Mike Pomfrey and Arthur Hughes.
Sheffield represented Yorkshire by virtue of our A Team winning the Yorkshire League, which it did by a long way!

The funeral will be held on Thursday the 30th May at 10.00am at Grenoside Crematorium North, 5 Skew Hill, Sheffield. There will then be a wake for anyone who wishes to share drinks and food, held at the Rose and Crown (Minnie’s) pub in Stannington immediately after (approx 11.30-1.30ish).

We are sad to report the passing of Toby Wall on Sunday 5thMay.
Toby was a very popular member of the club for more than twenty years, playing regularly in many different club sessions and with many different partners. He also took part in the Waddington and Yorkshire League teams. A staunch supporter of the club, he had been a trustee for very many years and also had a short spell on the committee as house manager before he had to step down due to ill health.
